About Steamed Spinach Discs

Spinach often gets a thumbs-down from kids due to its distinct taste, but this innovative recipe cleverly blends spinach with gram flour and eggs to create a flavor that's both mild and appealing. By steaming instead of frying, these discs become a wholesome treat, perfect for those who usually shy away from greens—adults included!
Quick to prepare and requiring no eno, these Steamed Spinach Discs are an excellent choice for a healthy evening snack or a tasty tiffin box addition. Enjoy them with any chutney or dip, though a tangy-sweet imli chutney truly brings out their best flavors. Give this fusion snack a try and delight your family with its nutritious twist!

Instructions

  • Combine all the ingredients in a wide mouthed bowl and make a thick but flowing batter. Add little water if needed.

  • More or less water depends upon the quality of the gram flour. I used nearly 3-4 tbsp of water. Keep it aside for 15 minutes.
  • Meanwhile grease the idli plates and heat up the water in a vessel for steaming.
  • Pour 2 tbsp of the batter in each groove of the plate and steam for around 20 mins.

  • Trust me they are so soft and so yummy that no one will ever find out that there is spinach in them.
  • Serve them steaming hot with imli chutney and any other dip of your choice. I served these for dinner with green chutney and imli chutney both.

Recipe Notes

Additional Tips

  • For extra crunch, sprinkle a thin layer of roasted sesame seeds or crushed peanuts on top of the batter before steaming; they’ll toast up beautifully and add a nutty note.
  • If you prefer a vegan version, simply replace the eggs with a flaxseed or chia seed gel (1 tablespoon ground seeds mixed with 3 tablespoons water per egg) to maintain binding and moisture.
  • After steaming, let the discs cool slightly and pan-sear them with a touch of oil for a minute on each side to create a crispier exterior while keeping the inside soft and flavorful.
  • These discs freeze well—layer them between parchment paper in an airtight container and reheat by steaming or microwaving for a quick, healthy snack anytime.
