Ingredients
Dough
- 400 gm All-Purpose Flour
- 1 Tbsp Salt
- 2 Tbsp Oil
- 2 Tbsp Milk for milk wash
Instructions
- In a bowl, combine the lukewarm water, sugar, and instant yeast. Gently stir to dissolve. Let stand for 10 minutes until the yeast activates and becomes foamy. This step ensures the yeast is alive and ready to leaven the bread.
- In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the all-purpose flour and salt. Create a well in the center and pour in the activated yeast mixture. Gradually incorporate the flour into the wet ingredients, mixing until a shaggy dough forms.
- Turn the dough out onto a lightly floured surface. Add the oil to the dough. Knead the dough for 10-15 minutes, or until it becomes smooth and elastic. The dough should spring back lightly when poked with a finger.
- Lightly grease a bowl with oil. Place the kneaded dough in the bowl, turning to coat. Cover the bowl with cling wrap and let the dough rise in a warm place for 30-40 minutes, or until doubled in size.
- Once doubled, gently punch down the dough to release the air. This helps to redistribute the yeast and create a finer crumb.
- Knead the dough briefly for another 5 minutes. Grease a 9x5 inch loaf pan. Shape the dough into a loaf and place it in the prepared pan.
- Brush the top of the loaf with milk. This milk wash will create a beautiful golden crust. Cover the loaf loosely with greased cling wrap and let it rise for a second time for about 40 minutes, or until almost doubled.
- Preheat oven to 200°C (400°F).
- Remove the cling wrap and brush the loaf with another layer of milk wash. Bake for 35 minutes, or until the crust is golden brown and the internal temperature reaches 200°F (93°C).
- Remove the bread from the oven and let it cool completely in the pan for at least 2 hours before slicing and serving. This allows the crumb to set properly and prevents a gummy texture.
Recipe Notes
Expert Tips
- For a richer flavor, use bread flour instead of all-purpose flour.
- Don't overknead the dough. Overkneading can result in a tough bread.
- Let the dough rise in a warm, draft-free place for optimal results.
Storage Instructions
- Store leftover bread in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 3 days or in the freezer for up to 3 months.
