Ingredients
Chutney Ingredients
- 2 cup Coconut chopped, fresh
- 1 cup Coriander cilantro, fresh
- 1/2 cup Split Chickpea split chickpeas, roasted
- 5 Chilies green, or to taste
- 1 Tbsp Tamarind Juice from soaking tamarind in water for 30 minutes
- 1 1/2 tsp Salt or to taste
Tempering Ingredients
- 2 Tbsp Oil
- 1 tsp Mustard Seeds
- 15 Curry Leaves
Instructions
- In a blender, combine the chopped coconut, fresh coriander, roasted chana dal, green chilies, tamarind juice, and salt.
- Blend until the mixture forms a smooth paste. For a smoother chutney, add a little water while blending.
- Transfer the chutney to a serving bowl.
- Heat the oil in a small pan over medium heat. Add the mustard seeds and allow them to splutter. This releases their aromatic oils and adds a nutty flavor.
- Add the curry leaves and sauté for a few seconds until fragrant. Be careful not to burn them.
- Pour the tempering over the chutney and stir gently to combine.
- Serve the Coconut Chutney with idli, dosa, vada, or any other South Indian dish. It can also be enjoyed as a spread or dip.
Recipe Notes
Good To Know
- For an extra layer of flavor, add a small piece of ginger and a few curry leaves while blending the chutney; this brings subtle warmth and a fragrant, authentic South Indian aroma.
- If you prefer a thicker, creamier chutney, use freshly grated coconut and reduce the amount of water during blending—this also helps the chutney hold up better when served with crispy snacks like vada or pakora.
- To extend the chutney’s shelf life, lightly toast the coconut in a pan for 2-3 minutes before blending; this reduces moisture and slows spoilage.
- For a nutty variation, replace half of the chana dal with roasted peanuts or cashews before blending; this adds a rich, earthy depth that pairs especially well with dosas.
Expert Tips
- Adjust the amount of green chilies to control the spice level of your chutney. Taste and add more as needed.
- For a smoother chutney, soak the chana dal in hot water for 30 minutes before grinding. This will help it blend more easily and create a creamier texture.
- A squeeze of lemon or lime juice added just before serving can brighten the flavors of the chutney.
Storage Instructions
- Store leftover chutney in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days.
