Ingredients
Prawn and Aromatics
- 500 gm Prawns or shrimps; deveined and cleaned
- 2 medium Onions roughly chopped
- 1 sprig Curry Leaves
Spices and Flavorings
- 1 tsp Chili Powder
- 0.25 tsp Turmeric Powder
- 1.5 tsp Cumin Powder
- 0.25 tsp Fenugreek Powder methi / vendhayam powder
- 0.25 tsp Mustard Seeds
- 0.25 tsp Cumin Seeds
Produce
- 250 gm Tomatoes finely chopped
Other Ingredients
- 2 tbsp Coconut Oil
- Salt to taste
- 1 cup Water
Instructions
Prepare the Aromatics
- Peel and roughly chop 2 medium onions. Finely chop the tomatoes.
Sauté the Spices
- Heat coconut oil in a pan or kadai. Add mustard seeds, cumin seeds, and curry leaves. Cook until the seeds crackle.
Cook the Onions and Tomatoes
- Add the chopped onions and cook until they turn golden brown. Stir in the chopped tomatoes and cook until soft and mushy.
Blend the Onion Mixture (Optional)
- For a smoother gravy, you can blend the cooked onion and tomato mixture using a blender or food processor before proceeding to the next step.
Add Spices and Cook
- Add chili powder, turmeric powder, cumin powder, and fenugreek powder. Stir well and cook until the raw smell of the spices disappears. Season with salt.
Add the Prawns
- Add the prawns and cook for 5 minutes.
Simmer the Gravy
- Pour in 1 cup of water. Cover the pan and cook until the prawns are fully cooked.
