Ingredients
 

Bread Base

  • 4 slices Bread white bread recommended
  • 1 cup Milk whole milk preferred

Sweetening and Flavoring

  • 1/2 cup Sugar adjust to your sweetness preference
  • 1/2 tsp Cardamom Powder elaichi; adds warmth and aroma

Fats and Texture

  • 1/4 cup Ghee clarified butter; adds richness
  • 1/4 cup Coconut grated, unsweetened

Optional Additions

  • 1/2 cup Fruits chopped; raisins, cranberries, dried, or chopped nuts
  • 2 tbsp Butter for greasing the pan

Instructions
 

Prepare the Bread

  • Grind 4 slices of bread coarsely using a food processor or by hand. Soak the bread crumbs in 1 cup of milk for 15 minutes to soften.

Sauté Coconut and Bread

  • Heat 1/4 cup of Desi Ghee in a non-stick pan over medium heat. Add 1/4 cup of grated coconut and sauté until lightly golden, stirring frequently. Add the soaked bread crumbs and mix well. Cook for a few minutes, adding a little extra milk if needed to prevent sticking.

Incorporate Sweeteners and Spices

  • Stir in 1/2 cup of sugar and 1/2 teaspoon of cardamom powder. Continue to cook, stirring constantly, until the mixture starts to come together and leave the sides of the pan. This will take about 5-10 minutes.

Add Optional Ingredients and Set

  • Stir in 1/2 cup of chopped dried fruits (optional). Grease a square baking dish (approximately 8x8 inches) with 2 tablespoons of butter. Pour the bread mixture into the prepared dish and spread evenly.

Cool and Cut

  • Allow the Bread Barfi to cool completely at room temperature. Once cooled, cut into small, square pieces. Serve and enjoy!
