Instructions

Prepare the Dough

  • Mix whole wheat flour, yeast, sugar, and salt in a large bowl.
  • Heat 3/4 cup milk with 2 tablespoons of melted butter. Ensure the milk is warm, not hot, to avoid killing the yeast.
  • Add the warm milk mixture to the dry ingredients. Gradually add water until a soft, smooth dough forms. Knead for 7-8 minutes until elastic.
  • Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover, and let rise in a warm place until doubled in size (approximately 1-1.5 hours).

Prepare the Garlic Herb Butter

  • In a small bowl, combine the remaining 2 tablespoons of softened butter, garlic powder (or minced garlic), dried herbs, and salt (if using unsalted butter).

Assemble and Shape the Rolls

  • Punch down the risen dough and divide it into 12 equal portions.
  • Roll each portion into a long oval. Spread the garlic herb butter mixture over each oval, then sprinkle with shredded cheese.
  • Roll up each oval like a Swiss roll, pinching the seam to seal. Repeat for all rolls except one. Shape the remaining dough into a ball, spread with butter and cheese, and shape it back into a ball.
  • Arrange the rolls and the cheese ball in a flower shape in a greased baking pan. Score each roll with a sharp knife and sprinkle with remaining cheese.
  • Cover the pan loosely and let the rolls rise for another 20-25 minutes.
  • Preheat oven to 400°F (200°C).

Bake and Serve

  • Brush the rolls with milk. Bake for 25-30 minutes, or until golden brown.
  • Remove from the oven, brush with melted butter, and let cool slightly before serving.

Recipe Notes

Expert Tips for Perfect Rolls:

  • For extra flavor, add a tablespoon of grated Parmesan cheese to the dough.
  • If your dough seems too dry, add a tablespoon of water at a time until it reaches the desired consistency.
  • Don't over-knead the dough; over-kneading can result in tough rolls.
  • For a richer flavor, use buttermilk instead of regular milk.
