About Homemade Flour Tortillas: Simple Recipe for Soft and Delicious Flatbreads
Homemade flour tortillas are easier to make than you think! This recipe delivers soft, pliable tortillas perfect for tacos, burritos, or simply enjoyed on their own. My first attempt at making these was surprisingly successful, and now they're a weekly staple in my kitchen.Using basic pantry ingredients like all-purpose flour, olive oil, and a touch of baking powder, these tortillas come together quickly. The key is to let the dough rest properly to develop its texture. These tortillas store well, too! Keep leftovers in a zip-top bag or airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days and reheat as needed. They're a convenient and delicious option for busy weeknights.

Instructions
Prepare the Dough
- Sift together the all-purpose flour, baking powder, and salt in a large bowl.
- Gradually add warm water, mixing with a fork until a shaggy dough forms.
- Knead the dough for 2-3 minutes until it comes together. Add more water if needed to reach a soft, slightly sticky consistency.
- Add the olive oil and knead for another 5 minutes until the dough is smooth and elastic.
- Cover the bowl with plastic wrap and let the dough rest at room temperature for at least 30 minutes, or up to 1 hour.
Shape and Cook the Tortillas
- Lightly flour a clean work surface. Divide the dough into 8-10 equal-sized balls.
- Roll each ball into a thin circle, about 6-7 inches in diameter, using a floured rolling pin. The dough should be pliable but not sticky.
- Heat a large griddle or skillet over medium heat.
- Place each tortilla on the hot griddle and cook for about 1-2 minutes per side, or until lightly browned and puffy.
- As each tortilla is cooked, stack them in a pile, covering with a clean kitchen towel to keep them warm and soft.
Serve and Enjoy
- Serve your homemade tortillas immediately with your favorite fillings. They are also delicious toasted lightly on a griddle for added crunch.
Recipe Notes
Expert Tips for Perfect Tortillas
- Don't overwork the dough: Overkneading can result in tough tortillas. Knead just until the dough is smooth and elastic.
- Use warm water: Warm water helps to activate the gluten in the flour, resulting in softer tortillas.
- Let the dough rest: Allowing the dough to rest allows the gluten to relax, resulting in more pliable tortillas.
- Adjust cooking time: Cooking time may vary depending on the heat of your griddle. Adjust accordingly to achieve the desired level of browning.
