Instructions

Preparing the Dough

  • Dry roast the barley flour in a pan over medium heat until fragrant. Add coconut flour and continue toasting for another minute. Remove from heat and stir in coconut sugar and cardamom powder.
  • Gradually add coconut milk, mixing well to form a smooth, pliable dough. Add a tablespoon or two of water if needed to achieve the right consistency. The dough should be easy to handle but not sticky.

Shaping the Modaks

  • Take a small portion of the dough (about 1 tablespoon) and flatten it in your palm. Add 1 teaspoon of the grated dried fruits in the center.
  • Carefully bring the edges of the dough together to form a half-moon or traditional modak shape. Seal the edges firmly.

Finishing Touches

  • Press the edges gently with your fingers or a fork to create a nice pattern. Roll the shaped modak in white sesame seeds to coat.

Serving and Storage

  • Serve the healthy barley modaks immediately or refrigerate for later. They can be stored in the refrigerator for up to a week.

Recipe Notes

Expert Tips for Perfect Healthy Barley Modaks

  • For a richer flavor, toast the coconut flour and sugar separately before adding them to the barley flour.
  • Adjust the amount of coconut milk based on the consistency of your dough. You may need slightly more or less depending on the type of barley flour you use.
  • Feel free to experiment with different types of dried fruits to customize the flavor profile of your modaks.
  • For an extra touch of sweetness, drizzle a little honey or maple syrup over the finished modaks before serving.
