- 1 Large Onion yellow
For the Batter
- 2 cup Rice Flour
- 1 tsp Salt or to taste
- 1/2 tsp Ginger ground
- 1/2 tsp Chili Powder red
- 1 tsp Oregano italian seasoning
- 1/4 tsp Pepper black, freshly ground, preferred
- 1/4 tsp Baking Soda also known as cooking soda
- 2 tbsp Vegetable Oil
- 1 cup Breadcrumb panko preferred
- Water as needed, to adjust batter consistency
Instructions
Prepare the Onion
- Cut the onion into petals, keeping the base intact. Gently separate the petals to create a blooming effect.
Prepare the Batter
- In a bowl, whisk together the rice flour, salt, ground ginger, red chili powder, oregano, black pepper, baking soda, and vegetable oil. Gradually add water until a smooth, pourable batter forms.
Prepare the Coating Stations
- Set up three shallow dishes: one with dry rice flour, one with the prepared batter, and one with breadcrumbs.
Coat the Onion
- First, dip the blooming onion into the dry rice flour, shaking off any excess. Next, fully coat the onion in the batter, ensuring all petals are covered. Add batter into crevices between onion petals. Invert the onion to remove excess batter.
Bread the Onion
- Finally, coat the onion thoroughly in the breadcrumbs.
Air Fry the Onion
- Preheat your air fryer to 180°C (350°F) for 5 minutes. Place the coated onion in the air fryer basket and air fry at 180°C (350°F) for 5 minutes, then increase the temperature to 200°C (400°F) and continue air frying for another 10 minutes, or until golden brown and crispy.
Serve
- Serve the blooming onion immediately. Enjoy with your favorite dipping sauce, such as mayonnaise and ketchup.
