Ingredients
For the Vegetable Filling
- 1 large Spring Onion chopped
- 1 large Carrot grated
- 1 large Bell Peppers grated
- 1 large Cauliflower grated
- 1 tsp Butter
- 1/2 tsp Salt or to taste
- 1 tsp Soy Sauce
- 1 tsp Garlic minced
- 1 tsp Vinegar
- 1 tsp Chili Sauce
- 1/3 tsp Chili Powder red
- 1/2 tsp Pepper black
For the Mustard Greens Filling
- 1 cup Mustard Greens chopped
- 1 tsp Butter
- 1 large Onion chopped
- 1 tsp Garlic minced
- 1/3 tsp Salt or to taste
- 1/3 tsp Chili Powder red
- 1/3 tsp Pepper black
For the Dough
- 1 bowl All-Purpose Flour
- 1 tsp Active Yeast dry
- 1 cup Milk lukewarm
- 1 Tbsp Butter softened
- 1 tsp Oregano and chili flakes, dried
Instructions
- In a large bowl, combine the flour, yeast, and softened butter. Mix well.
- Gradually add the lukewarm milk to the flour mixture, kneading until a smooth and elastic dough forms. Cover the bowl and let the dough rest in a warm place for 1 hour, or until doubled in size.
- Prepare the vegetable filling: Melt butter in a wok or large skillet over medium heat. Add the grated carrot, bell pepper, cauliflower, and chopped spring onion. Sauté for 5 minutes, until slightly softened.
- Add the soy sauce, minced garlic, vinegar, chili sauce, red chili powder, salt, and black pepper to the vegetable mixture. Stir well to combine and cook for another minute. Remove from heat and set aside.
- Prepare the mustard greens filling: Melt butter in a separate pan over medium heat. Add the chopped onion and minced garlic. Sauté until the onions are translucent.
- Add the chopped mustard greens, salt, red chili powder, and black pepper to the pan. Stir well, cover, and cook for 5 minutes over low heat, or until the greens are wilted. Remove from heat and set aside.
- Divide the rested dough into 3 equal portions. On a lightly floured surface, roll each portion into a thin circle, like a chapati or tortilla.
- Place one of the rolled-out dough circles on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper. Spread half of the vegetable filling evenly over the surface.
- Top with the second dough circle and spread the mustard greens filling evenly over it. Cover with the third dough circle.
- Place a small, oven-safe bowl or ramekin in the center of the stacked dough circles. This will help maintain the flower shape while cutting. Using a sharp knife or pizza cutter, make 4 large cuts from the edge of the dough towards the central bowl, dividing the dough into quarters. Then, make another 4 cuts between the initial cuts, creating 8 equal sections.
- Carefully lift and twist each section of dough twice, creating a petal-like shape. Tuck the end of each twisted section underneath the base to secure it.
- Remove the central bowl. Brush the surface of the formed flower bread with melted butter. This will create a beautiful golden crust.
- Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Bake the flower bread for 15-20 minutes, or until golden brown and cooked through.
- Remove from the oven and brush with melted butter. Sprinkle with dried oregano and chili flakes. Serve warm and enjoy!
Recipe Notes
Good To Know
- For an extra burst of flavor, brush the bread with a mixture of melted butter, minced garlic, and a pinch of chili flakes right after it comes out of the oven.
- If you want a cheesy twist, sprinkle grated cheese (such as mozzarella, cheddar, or a mix) over the vegetable filling before shaping the bread—this will add richness and help bind the filling together.
- To shape the ‘flower’ design more easily, chill the dough for 15-20 minutes after the first rise; this makes it less sticky and easier to cut and twist without tearing.
Expert Tips
- Don't overfill the bread. Too much filling can make it difficult to shape and may prevent the dough from cooking through evenly.
- For a crispier crust, lightly spray the shaped bread with water before baking.
- Get creative with the fillings! Try different combinations of vegetables, cheeses, and herbs to customize your flower bread.
Storage Instructions
- Leftovers can be wrapped in foil and gently reheated in the oven at 160°C (320°F) for 8-10 minutes; this keeps the crust crisp and the inside fluffy without drying it out.
