- 2 tsp Butter unsalted butter is preferred for better flavor control.
Instructions
Prepare the Fruit
- Peel and core the apple and pear. Chop both fruits into small, roughly 1/2-inch pieces.
Caramelize the Fruit
- Heat the butter in a medium saucepan over medium heat. Add the apple and pear pieces and cook, stirring occasionally, for about 5-7 minutes, until they begin to soften.
Add Sweetener and Spices (Optional)
- Stir in the coconut sugar, cinnamon, and nutmeg (if using). Continue to cook, stirring frequently, for another 8-10 minutes, or until the fruit is tender and the sugar has caramelized to a rich golden brown color. The mixture will thicken slightly.
Cool and Store
- Remove from heat and allow the caramelized apple and pear mixture to cool completely to room temperature. Transfer to an airtight container and refrigerate for at least 30 minutes to allow the flavors to meld. This will also help the mixture to thicken further.
Serve and Enjoy
- Serve the caramelized apple and pear topping over your favorite ice cream, French toast, crepes, or use as a delicious filling for sandwiches or pastries.
Recipe Notes
Expert Tips
- For a deeper caramel flavor, use a combination of coconut sugar and a touch of maple syrup.
- Don't overcrowd the pan; cook the fruit in batches if necessary to ensure even caramelization.
- Adjust the cooking time depending on the ripeness of the fruit. Softer fruits will caramelize more quickly.
- Store the leftover caramelized apple and pear mixture in the refrigerator for up to 5 days.
