Ingredients
Spinach Filling
- 1/2 cup Spinach fresh or blanched and pureed
- 1 cup Breadcrumb fresh
- 1 1/2 tsp Salt or to taste
- 1/2 tsp Pepper black, crushed
Cheese Filling
- 1 cup Cheese grated, processed
- 1 tsp Oregano dried
- 1/2 tsp Pepper Flakes red
Other Ingredients
- Oil for deep frying
- 1 cup Corn Flour Slurry
- 1 cup Breadcrumb fresh
Instructions
- In a mixing bowl, combine the spinach, bread crumbs, salt, and pepper. Mix well to form a soft dough. This will be the outer layer of your surprise balls.
- Shape the spinach mixture into small balls. Set aside.
- In another bowl, combine the grated processed cheese, oregano, and red pepper flakes. Mix well and form smaller balls than the spinach balls. This cheese mixture will be the surprise inside!
- Take a spinach ball and gently flatten it. Place a cheese ball in the center. Reshape the spinach mixture around the cheese, forming a smooth, round ball. Repeat this process for all the balls.
- Dip each stuffed ball into the corn flour slurry, ensuring it's fully coated. This helps the breadcrumbs adhere and creates a wonderfully crispy exterior.
- Roll the slurry-coated balls in the fresh bread crumbs, pressing gently to ensure they stick. This double breading technique guarantees extra crunch.
- Heat the oil in a deep fryer or large pot to medium heat. Carefully add the breaded balls to the hot oil, ensuring not to overcrowd the pot. Fry until they turn a beautiful golden brown and the cheese inside is melted and gooey.
- Remove the golden-brown cheese balls from the oil with a slotted spoon. Place them on a plate lined with paper towels to absorb excess oil. Serve hot with your favorite dipping sauce, such as ketchup or chutney.
Recipe Notes
Good To Know
- For extra flavor and a bit of crunch, try adding finely chopped nuts such as cashews or almonds into the cheese stuffing before shaping the balls.
- If you want a spicier kick, mix a pinch of red chili flakes or finely chopped green chilies into the bread crumb coating or directly into the spinach mixture.
- To ensure the cheese remains delightfully gooey, chill the formed balls for at least 20 minutes in the freezer before frying; this helps prevent the cheese from leaking out during cooking.
- These cheese balls can be baked at 200°C (390°F) for 15-18 minutes as a healthier alternative to deep frying; brush lightly with oil and turn halfway for even browning.
Expert Tips
- For an even crispier coating, try a double-breading method. Dip the chilled cheese balls in the bread crumbs, then in a beaten egg, and back into the bread crumbs before frying or baking.
- Experiment with different cheeses! Mozzarella is classic, but try mixing it with other cheeses like provolone, Monterey Jack, or even a bit of sharp cheddar for a unique flavor profile.
- Serve these cheese balls with a variety of dipping sauces, such as marinara sauce, ranch dressing, or a sweet chili sauce.
Storage Instructions
- Store leftover cheese balls in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days. Reheat in a preheated oven at 175°C (350°F) for 5-7 minutes, or until heated through.
