Instructions

Prepare the Oat Blend

  • Lightly dry roast the rolled oats and cumin seeds in a pan until fragrant. Grind them into a fine powder using a spice grinder or blender.

Combine Ingredients

  • In a large bowl, whisk together the yogurt (or buttermilk), water, and salt. Add the oat and cumin powder mixture, stirring until well combined. Let it sit for 10-15 minutes to allow the oats to soften.

Blend the Spices

  • Finely chop the ginger, green chili, and coriander. Combine them in a blender and blend to a smooth paste.

Blend the Buttermilk

  • Add the oat and yogurt mixture, the spice paste, and ice cubes to the blender. Blend until smooth and creamy. Add a little more water if needed to reach your desired consistency.

Serve

  • Pour the Spiced Oat Buttermilk into glasses filled with ice. Garnish with a sprinkle of cumin powder (optional) and serve immediately.

  • Adjust the amount of green chili to control the spice level. Start with less and add more to taste.
  • Experiment with other spices! A pinch of cardamom or cinnamon would add a lovely warmth.
  • For a thicker buttermilk, use less water or increase the amount of yogurt.
