Ingredients
For the Dough
- 1 cup All-Purpose Flour maida, use high-quality all-purpose flour for best results. also known as maida.
- 1/4 tsp Saffron Strands dissolve in 1/4 cup warm milk for best color and flavor.
- 1/2 tsp Active Yeast dry
- 3 tbsp Sugar granulated
- 1/4 cup Milk warm milk is essential for activating the yeast.
- 1/4 tsp Salt adjust to your taste preference.
- 2 tbsp Vegetable Oil
- 1/4 cup Water used to activate the yeast.
For Garnishing
- 1 tbsp Sesame Seeds
- 2 tbsp Coconut for garnish, shredded
- 1/4 cup Cashews chopped, for garnish, roasted
- 4-6 Glazed Cherries halved, for garnish
Instructions
Activate the Yeast
- Combine yeast, 1 tbsp sugar, and 1/4 cup warm water in a small bowl. Stir well and let stand for 5-10 minutes until foamy.
Prepare the Milk Mixture
- In a separate bowl, whisk together the remaining 2 tbsp sugar and 1/4 cup warm milk. Add the salt and vegetable oil; whisk to combine.
Combine and Knead
- Add the yeast mixture to the milk mixture and stir well. Gradually add the flour, kneading until a soft, smooth dough forms. Knead for 5-7 minutes until elastic.
First Rise
- Place the dough in a lightly oiled bowl, turning to coat. Cover with plastic wrap and let rise in a warm place for about 1-1.5 hours, or until doubled in size.
Shape and Prick
- Punch down the dough to release the air. Divide the dough into 6-8 equal portions. Roll each portion into an oval shape, about 1/4 inch thick. Prick the surface with a fork.
Saffron Milk Wash
- Brush the surface of each sheermal with the saffron-infused milk. Sprinkle with sesame seeds.
Bake
- Preheat oven to 320°F (160°C). Bake for 10-12 minutes, or until golden brown.
Garnish and Serve
- Garnish with shredded coconut, chopped roasted cashews, and halved glazed cherries before serving. Enjoy!
