Instructions

Prepare the Bread

  • Cut each slice of brown bread into two smaller pieces.
  • Deep fry the bread pieces in hot vegetable oil until they are golden brown and crispy. Remove and drain on paper towels.

Make the Sugar Syrup

  • In a small saucepan, combine the sugar and water. Stir over medium heat until the sugar dissolves completely.
  • Bring the mixture to a simmer, then reduce the heat to low and cook for about 5-7 minutes, or until the syrup slightly thickens. Do not stir excessively.
  • Add the cardamom pods and cook for another minute, allowing the cardamom flavor to infuse the syrup.
  • Remove from heat and let the syrup cool slightly.

Combine and Serve

  • Add the fried bread pieces to the warm sugar syrup. Gently toss to ensure all pieces are coated.
  • Let the bread soak in the syrup for at least 10 minutes, or until the bread is soft and saturated.
  • Remove the bread from the syrup and let it cool completely. For optimal flavor, refrigerate for at least 30 minutes before serving.

Recipe Notes

Expert Tips for Perfect Mithi Bread

  • For extra crispy bread, allow the fried pieces to cool completely before adding them to the syrup.
  • Adjust the amount of sugar in the syrup to your liking. If you prefer a less sweet dessert, reduce the sugar by 1-2 tablespoons.
  • Finely crush the cardamom pods before adding them to the syrup to release more flavor. Alternatively, use cardamom powder (1 teaspoon).
  • For a richer flavor, use ghee (clarified butter) instead of vegetable oil for frying the bread.
