Ingredients
Spinach Dough
- 1/2 cup Spinach pureed
- 1 cup Breadcrumb
- 2 Tbsp Corn Flour
- 1/2 tsp Salt or to taste
Cheese Filling
- 1/2 cup Mozzarella Cheese shredded
- 2 Tbsp Onion finely chopped
- 1/4 tsp Garlic Paste
- 1/2 tsp Oregano dried
- 1/2 tsp Pepper Flakes red
- 1 1/2 tsp Salt or to taste
For Frying
- Oil for frying
Instructions
- In a bowl, combine the spinach puree, breadcrumbs, corn flour, and salt. Mix thoroughly until a smooth dough forms.
- In a separate bowl, combine the shredded mozzarella, finely chopped onion, garlic paste, dried oregano, red pepper flakes, and salt. Mix well.
- Lightly grease your hands with oil. Take a portion of the spinach dough and flatten it into a small disc.
- Place a portion of the mozzarella cheese mixture in the center of the spinach disc. Gently wrap the dough around the cheese, forming a ball. Ensure the cheese is completely sealed inside to prevent leakage during frying.
- Heat the oil in a pan over medium-high heat. Carefully place the spinach and cheese balls into the hot oil. Fry until golden brown and crispy, turning occasionally for even cooking.
- Remove the fried spinach and cheese balls from the oil and place them on a plate lined with paper towels to absorb excess oil. Serve immediately with your favorite dipping sauce, such as ketchup or a spicy chili sauce.
Recipe Notes
Good To Know
- Blanch the spinach leaves for 2-3 minutes before grinding.
- For best results, squeeze out as much moisture as possible from the cooked spinach before mixing with other ingredients; this prevents sogginess and helps the cheese balls hold their shape during frying.
- If you prefer a less oily version, arrange the shaped balls on a baking tray, spray lightly with oil, and bake at 200°C (390°F) for 15-18 minutes or until golden and crispy.
- Try adding a pinch of chaat masala or amchur powder to the filling for a tangy Indian twist that complements the mozzarella and spices.
- To prepare ahead, shape the cheese balls and freeze them on a tray; once solid, transfer to a ziplock bag. Fry directly from frozen, adding an extra minute to the cooking time.
Expert Tips
- For an extra crispy exterior, double fry the cheese balls. Fry once at a lower temperature to cook through, then again at a higher temperature to crisp.
- Ensure the oil is hot enough before frying to prevent the cheese balls from absorbing too much oil and becoming greasy.
- Serve these spinach and mozzarella balls with a side of marinara sauce, a creamy yogurt dip, or a spicy chutney for dipping.
Storage Instructions
- Store leftover cheese balls in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days. Reheat in a preheated oven or air fryer until warmed through.
