Ingredients
For the Moong Dal
- 1 cup Mung Beans moong dal, without skin, rinsed, split, yellow
- 3 cup Water
- 1/2 tsp Salt or to taste
- 1 tsp Cumin Seeds jeera, powdered, roasted
- 1/2 tsp Salt black
- 1 tbsp Lemon Juice
- 1 tbsp Ghee or desi ghee
- 1/2 tsp Chili Powder or to taste, red
- 2 Chili whole, dried, for frying, red
- 1/4 cup Onion chopped, finely
For the Fried Potatoes
- 2 Large Potatoes peeled and diced into 1-inch cubes
- 1/4 cup Vegetable Oil for frying
- 1/2 tsp Salt or to taste
For Garnishing
- 1-2 Chilies finely chopped, green
- 1/2 tsp Chaat Masala
Instructions
Prepare the Moong Dal
- Wash and soak the moong dal in water for 30 minutes.
- Drain the dal and transfer it to a saucepan. Add 3 cups of water and salt. Bring to a boil, then reduce heat and simmer until the dal is soft and forms a thick paste (about 20-25 minutes).
- While the dal simmers, fry the whole dried red chilies in 1 tablespoon of ghee until fragrant and slightly browned. Set aside.
- Once the dal is cooked, remove from heat and stir in the roasted cumin powder.
Prepare the Fried Potatoes
- Heat the vegetable oil in a pan over medium-high heat. Add the diced potatoes and salt. Fry until golden brown and crispy, stirring occasionally (about 10-12 minutes).
- Remove the potatoes from the pan and drain on paper towels.
Assemble the Chaat
- In a serving bowl, add the cooked moong dal. Garnish with the fried potatoes, fried red chilies, black salt, red chili powder, chopped onion, lemon juice, and ghee.
- Finally, garnish with chopped green chilies and chaat masala.
