Ingredients
Bread
- 3-4 slices Bread firm, white
Batter
- 1 cup Gram Flour besan
- 1 tbsp Cumin jeera, seeds
- 1 tbsp Chili Powder red
- 1/2 tbsp Garam Masala
- Salt to taste
- 1/2 cup Water + 2 tablespoons more as needed
For Frying
- Oil for frying
Instructions
- Slice each piece of bread lengthwise into 2 equal halves. This creates thinner pakora that cook evenly.
Mix all the dry ingredients together
- In a large bowl, combine the gram flour, cumin seeds, garam masala, red chili powder, and salt.
- Gradually whisk in the water, starting with ½ cup, to form a smooth batter. Add 1-2 more tablespoons of water if needed to achieve a consistency similar to pancake batter. A smooth batter ensures a light and crispy pakora.
- Heat the oil in a large frying pan over medium-high heat. The oil is ready when a small drop of batter sizzles immediately.
- Dip each bread slice into the batter, ensuring it's fully coated.
- Carefully place the battered bread slices into the hot oil, working in batches to avoid overcrowding the pan. Overcrowding lowers the oil temperature and leads to soggy pakora.
- Fry for 2-3 minutes per side, turning occasionally, until golden brown and crispy.
- Remove the pakora from the pan and place them on a wire rack or paper towel-lined plate to drain excess oil. This helps maintain their crispiness.
- Serve the bread pakora immediately while hot, accompanied by green chutney and ketchup.
Recipe Notes
Expert Tips
- For extra crispy pakoras, add a pinch of baking soda to the batter.
- Don't overcrowd the pan when frying. Fry in batches to ensure even cooking and crispiness.
- Serve immediately with your favorite chutney or dipping sauce for the best flavor and texture.
Storage Instructions
- Pakoras are best enjoyed fresh. However, leftovers can be stored in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 2 days.
- Reheat in a preheated oven at 350°F (175°C) for 5-7 minutes, or until heated through and crispy.
