Prepare the Prawns

  • Clean the prawns thoroughly and pat them dry. Sprinkle with ½ tsp turmeric powder and set aside.

Make the Spice Paste

  • Combine garlic, ginger, red chilies, cardamom pods, and cinnamon stick in a food processor or blender. Blend into a smooth paste.

Cook the Curry

  • Heat mustard oil in a pan or pot over medium heat. Add cumin seeds and let them splutter.
  • Add the chopped onion and sauté until golden brown.
  • Add half of the spice paste and sauté until fragrant and slightly browned.
  • Stir in the chopped tomato and green chili. Add ½ tsp red chili powder. Sauté for a few minutes.
  • Add 4 cups of water and bring to a boil.
  • Add the marinated prawns, salt, and remaining spice paste.
  • Simmer for 20-25 minutes, or until the prawns are cooked through and the sauce has thickened. Stir occasionally to prevent sticking.

Garnish and Serve

  • Garnish with fresh coriander leaves. Serve hot with steamed basmati rice or naan bread.
