Ingredients
For the Moong Dal Dumplings
- 100 gm Mung Bean roasted, yellow
For the Tempering
- 2 tsp Mustard Oil
- 2 Chilies finely chopped, green
- 1/2 cup Coriander finely chopped, fresh
- 1 1/2 tsp Salt or to taste
Instructions
- Soak the roasted moong dal in water for 3-4 hours to soften it for cooking. This ensures a tender dumpling.
- Gather the soaked dal in a piece of clean muslin cloth or cheesecloth. Tie it securely to form a potli (dumpling).
- As you begin cooking your Basmati rice, submerge the moong dal potli into the boiling water along with the rice. This allows the dal to steam and absorb the fragrant flavors of the rice.
- Once the rice is cooked and the water has been absorbed, carefully remove the potli from the pot. Allow it to cool slightly before handling.
- Open the potli and transfer the steamed dal to a bowl. Mash the dal until it reaches a smooth consistency.
- Add the chopped green chilies, fresh cilantro, salt, and mustard oil to the mashed dal. Mix well to combine all the flavors.
- Serve the flavorful Moong Potli hot with the freshly steamed Basmati rice for a truly authentic Bangladeshi experience.
Recipe Notes
Good To Know
- For a more aromatic and flavorful potli, toast the yellow moong dal in a dry pan until it turns golden and releases a nutty fragrance before boiling—this adds depth to the final dish.
- To create an extra-special presentation, tie the cooked dal into small 'potlis' (bundles) using blanched scallion greens or thin strips of banana leaf, then serve over steamed Basmati rice for a festive look.
- If you prefer a milder dish, deseed the green chillies before adding, or replace them with finely chopped mild peppers to retain color without too much heat.
- Leftover moong potli can be shaped into small patties and shallow-fried for a delicious next-day snack or sandwich filling.
Expert Tips
- For a richer flavor, consider adding a dollop of ghee or a sprinkle of toasted cumin seeds just before serving.
- Freshly grated coconut can be incorporated into the dal mixture before tying into potlis for added sweetness and texture.
- A squeeze of lemon juice enhances the flavors and adds brightness to the dish.
Storage Instructions
- Store leftover moong potli in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days. Reheat gently in a microwave or steamer.
