Ingredients
Bread
- 8 slices Bread
Filling
Spices and Cheese
- 2 tsp Salt to taste
- 1 tsp Turmeric Powder
- 1 tsp Chili Powder
- 1/2 cup Cheese grated
For Grilling
- 2 Tbsp Butter
Instructions
- Prepare the vegetables. Thinly slice the onion, shred the cabbage, and julienne the carrots. Finely chop the green chilies.
- In a pan over medium heat, melt the butter. Add the sliced onions and sauté until translucent. This builds a flavor base for the filling.
- Add the chopped green chilies, salt, turmeric powder, and chili powder to the pan. Stir well to combine.
- Add the shredded cabbage and julienned carrots to the pan. Sauté for 2 minutes, or until slightly softened but still retaining some crunch.
- Remove the pan from the heat. Lightly butter one side of each bread slice. Spread the vegetable mixture evenly over the unbuttered side of four bread slices. Top with grated cheese and then with the remaining buttered bread slices to form sandwiches.
- Heat a grill pan or skillet over medium heat. Add a little butter to the pan. Grill the sandwiches until golden brown and the cheese is melted and gooey, flipping halfway through.
- Serve the sandwiches immediately and enjoy!
Recipe Notes
Good To Know
- For extra crunch and flavor, spread a thin layer of butter mixed with a pinch of garlic powder on the outside of the bread before grilling or toasting.
- If you prefer a milder heat, deseed the green chilies before finely chopping and adding them to the cheese mixture, or substitute with sweet bell peppers for a colorful twist.
- To create a sweet-savory street food vibe, drizzle a small amount of honey or use a sweet chili sauce inside the sandwich before grilling for a unique fusion touch.
- If preparing ahead, assemble the sandwiches and wrap them tightly in foil; then, toast or grill just before serving to keep the bread crisp and the cheese gooey.
Expert Tips
- Use a high-quality cheese blend for the best melting and flavor. A mix of mozzarella, cheddar, and Monterey Jack works well.
- For even cooking, ensure your griddle or panini press is preheated to the correct temperature before adding the sandwiches.
- Don't overcrowd the pan when grilling or toasting. This will ensure even browning and prevent steaming.
Storage Instructions
- These sandwiches are best enjoyed fresh. Leftovers can be stored in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 2 days. Reheat in a toaster oven or skillet until warmed through.
