Ingredients
For the Dough
- 1 cup Whole Wheat Flour whole
- 1 ½ tsp Salt or to taste
- Water as needed
For the Chickpea Filling
- 1 cup Chickpeas chana dal, soaked for several hours, split
- 1 inch Ginger
- 2-3 clove Garlic
- 2 Chillies green
- 1 tsp Turmeric Powder haldi
- 1 tsp Garam Masala
- 1 ½ tsp Salt or to taste
- ¼ cup Coriander dhania, chopped
For the Tempering
- 2 tbsp Oil
- 5-6 Curry Leaves
- 2 tsp Cumin Seeds
- 1 tsp Sesame Seeds
Instructions
- In a large bowl, combine the whole wheat flour and salt. Gradually add water, mixing until a soft dough forms. Knead for a few minutes until smooth and elastic. This develops the gluten, resulting in softer Fara. Cover the dough and let it rest while you prepare the filling.
- Drain and rinse the soaked split chickpeas.
- In a food processor or grinder, combine the drained chickpeas, ginger, garlic, green chilies, and cumin seeds. Pulse until coarsely ground.
- Transfer the chickpea mixture to a bowl. Stir in the chopped cilantro, garam masala, turmeric powder, and salt. Mix well to combine.
- Divide the dough into small, lemon-sized balls. Roll each ball into a thin disc using a rolling pin. Place a spoonful of the chickpea filling in the center of each disc.
- Fold the dough over the filling to form a half-moon shape, pressing the edges firmly to seal. Repeat with the remaining dough and filling.
- Bring a large pot of salted water to a boil. Add a teaspoon of oil to prevent sticking. Gently drop the Fara into the boiling water. Boil until they float to the surface, indicating they are cooked through.
- Remove the cooked Fara with a slotted spoon and set aside to cool slightly.
- Heat the oil for tempering in a pan. Add the cumin seeds and sesame seeds. Once they begin to crackle, add the curry leaves. Add the Fara and sauté for a few minutes until heated through and lightly crisped. This adds a wonderful aroma and texture.
