To keep things interesting, I created this Spicy Mushroom Pepper Fry – a vibrant, aromatic dish bursting with flavor. It's become a new household favorite!This South Indian-inspired recipe combines tender mushrooms with onions, tomatoes, and a blend of warming spices for a delicious kick. Ingredients
Spices
- 2 Chilies dry, red
- 1 tbsp Peppercorns black
- 1 tsp Fennel Seeds also known as saunf
- 1 tbsp Coriander Seeds
- 1 tsp Cumin Seeds
- 1/2 tsp Chili Powder
- 1/2 tsp Garam Masala
- 1 tsp Salt to taste
Vegetables & Mushrooms
Other Ingredients
- 2 tbsp Ginger-Garlic Paste
- 2 strings Curry Leaves
- 2 tbsp Oil vegetable or canola oil
Instructions
Prepare the Spice Blend
- Dry roast the red chilies, peppercorns, fennel seeds, cumin seeds, and coriander seeds in a dry pan until fragrant. Allow to cool completely, then grind into a fine powder.
Sauté Aromatics
- Heat 1 tablespoon of oil in a pan or kadai. Add half of the curry leaves, onions, and ginger-garlic paste. Sauté until the onions become translucent.
Add Tomatoes and Mushrooms
- Add the chopped tomatoes and sauté until they soften. Then, add the sliced mushrooms, chili powder, salt, and garam masala. Sauté for a few minutes until the mushrooms release their liquid and slightly brown.
Incorporate Spice Blend
- Stir in the ground spice blend and remaining curry leaves. Cook for another minute or two, until fragrant and well combined.
Serve
- Serve hot with steamed rice, curd rice, roti, or naan.

- For a richer flavor, use a combination of mushroom types.
- Adjust the amount of chili powder to control the spice level.
