Ingredients
For the Uttapam Batter
For the Pizza Topping
- 1/2 medium Onion finely chopped
- 1/2 medium Bell Peppers capsicum, finely chopped
- 1 medium Tomato finely chopped, seeded
- 2 tbsp Pizza Sauce
- 1/4 cup Mozzarella Cheese grated
- 1/4 tsp Pepper ground, black
- 1/4 tsp Oregano flakes, dried
- 1/2 tsp Pepper Flakes chili flakes, red
- 2 tbsp Oil for greasing the pan and drizzling
Instructions
Prepare the Batter
- In a large bowl, combine the semolina, yogurt, salt, and water. Mix well until a thick batter forms. Let the batter rest for at least 15 minutes.
Cook the Uttapam
- Heat a lightly oiled non-stick pan or griddle over medium heat. Pour a ladleful of batter onto the hot pan, spreading it to form a thin, round uttapam.
Flip and Cook
- Cook the uttapam for 2-3 minutes per side, or until lightly golden brown and cooked through. Flip halfway through and drizzle a little oil on both sides for added crispness.
Add Toppings
- Spread a thin layer of pizza sauce evenly over the cooked uttapam. Top with the chopped onion, bell pepper, and tomato.
Melt the Cheese
- Sprinkle the grated mozzarella cheese over the vegetables. Cover the pan and cook for another 2-3 minutes, or until the cheese is melted and bubbly.
Finish and Serve
- Remove the Pizza Uttapam from the pan and transfer it to a serving plate. Sprinkle with oregano, red pepper flakes, and black pepper. Serve hot with chutney or sambar.

Expert Tips for the Perfect Pizza Uttapam
- For a crispier uttapam, use a well-seasoned cast iron skillet.
- Don't overcrowd the pan; cook the uttapams in batches to ensure even cooking.
- Feel free to customize your toppings! Add other vegetables like mushrooms, spinach, or olives.
- If your batter is too thick, add a little more water, a tablespoon at a time, until you reach the desired consistency.
