Instructions

  • Lightly grease a 6-inch square pan with butter. This will prevent the squares from sticking.
  • Toast the rolled oats in a dry pan over medium heat for about 5 minutes until fragrant. This enhances their nutty flavor and adds a pleasant crunch. Set aside to cool.
  • In a microwave-safe bowl, combine the chopped dark chocolate and peanut butter.
  • Microwave for 1 minute, then stir until smooth. If needed, microwave in 15-second intervals, stirring after each, until the chocolate is completely melted and combined with the peanut butter.
  • Add the toasted oats and sweetened condensed milk to the chocolate mixture. Stir until everything is well combined.
  • Microwave for 1 minute, then stir vigorously until the mixture is evenly heated and slightly thickened.
  • Pour the mixture into the prepared pan and spread evenly. Gently tap the pan on the counter to level the surface.
  • Sprinkle the chopped toasted almonds evenly over the top and press them lightly into the mixture.
  • Let the squares cool completely at room temperature. This allows the mixture to firm up and makes it easier to cut.
  • Once cooled, cut into squares and serve.

Recipe Notes

Good To Know

  • This breakfast is very filling; just one square will keep you full until lunchtime.
  • This recipe is adapted from Late Chef Tarla Dalal with slight modifications.
  • For extra texture and chewiness, add a handful of dried cranberries or chopped dates with the almonds.
  • For a less sweet version, replace half the condensed milk with unsweetened Greek yogurt.
  • Let the melted dark chocolate cool slightly before drizzling to prevent it from seeping into the oat layer.
  • To make these squares vegan, replace condensed milk with coconut cream and maple syrup, use dairy-free chocolate, and plant-based butter alternatives.

Expert Tips

  • For a cleaner cut, chill the oat mixture thoroughly before slicing into squares.
  • Lightly grease the pan with coconut oil or butter for easier removal.
  • Get creative with toppings! Sprinkle sea salt, chopped nuts, or a drizzle of nut butter after the chocolate sets.

Storage Instructions

  • Store leftover squares in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 3 days or in the refrigerator for up to a week.
