- 2 tbsp Coriander Leaves for garnish, chopped
Instructions
Prepare the Ingredients
- Wash the rice and moong dal thoroughly under running water. Drain well and set aside.
Pressure Cook the Dal and Rice
- Heat a pressure cooker. Add the rice, moong dal, water, diced potatoes, turmeric powder, and salt. Stir in 2 tablespoons of ghee or butter. Close the cooker and pressure cook on high heat for 3-4 whistles or until the dal and rice are completely cooked.
Temper the Spices
- Once the pressure releases naturally, mash the cooked dal and rice slightly with a spoon. Set aside.
- Heat the remaining 1 tablespoon of ghee or butter in a pan over medium heat. Add the asafoetida (if using), mustard seeds, and cumin seeds. Once the seeds begin to splutter, add the chopped tomatoes and green chilies. Cook until the tomatoes soften.
Combine and Finish
- Stir in the garam masala (if using). Add the cooked dal and rice mixture to the pan. Mix well. Add a little water if needed to achieve a slightly thin, not thick, consistency. Adjust salt as needed.
Garnish and Serve
- Stir in the chopped coriander leaves. Serve the Masala Dal Khichdi hot. Enjoy with papads, pickles, raita, or curd.
Recipe Notes
Expert Tips for the Best Masala Dal Khichdi
- For a richer flavor: Toast the rice and dal lightly in a pan before pressure cooking.
- Adjust spice levels: Add more or fewer green chilies depending on your preference for heat.
- Add vegetables: Enhance the nutritional value by adding other vegetables like carrots, peas, or beans.
- Control consistency: Remember that khichdi thickens as it cools, so adjust the water accordingly during preparation.
