Instructions
Make the Fish Filling
- Boil the fish fillets in water with a pinch of salt until cooked through. This ensures the fish is flaky and easy to shred.
- Finely chop the onion and green chili.
- Drain the cooked fish and gently flake it with your hands, removing any bones.
- In a bowl, combine the flaked fish, chopped green chili, salt, cumin powder, pepper powder, mashed potato, and lemon juice. Mix well.
- Heat olive oil in a pan over medium heat. Add the chopped onions and sauté until translucent and lightly golden.
- Add the fish mixture to the pan and cook for 5 minutes, stirring occasionally. This allows the flavors to meld together.
- Remove the pan from the heat and let the filling cool to room temperature.
Make the Fish Fry
- Wash and pat dry the fish fillets for frying. Slice each fillet lengthwise into two equal halves.
- Marinate the fish fillets with salt and pepper.
- In a bowl, whisk the eggs with a pinch of salt.
- In another bowl, combine the all-purpose flour, chili powder, pepper powder, and salt.
- Heat olive oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Dredge each fish fillet in the flour mixture, then dip in the egg mixture, ensuring it's fully coated. Gently place the coated fillets in the hot oil.
- Fry the fish for 5-8 minutes on each side, until golden brown and cooked through. Flipping ensures even cooking and a crispy exterior.
- Remove the fried fish from the skillet and place them on a plate lined with paper towels to drain excess oil.
Assemble the Sandwich
- Chop the cheese slices into smaller pieces.
- Spread a generous layer of the fish filling on one slice of bread. Top with cheese pieces.
- Spread mayonnaise on another slice of bread and place it on top of the filling, creating a sandwich.
- Toast the sandwich in a pan or sandwich press until golden brown and the cheese is melted. Toasting adds warmth and enhances the flavors.
- Serve the toasted fish sandwich hot with the crispy fish fry, extra mayonnaise, and tomato ketchup.
Recipe Notes
Good To Know
- For an extra burst of tanginess, try layering thinly sliced pickled onions or pickled jalapeños along with the filling. These complement the pepper and lemon flavors beautifully and add crunch.
- If you want a crispier sandwich texture, lightly toast the bread in a pan with a little butter or ghee before assembling. This also helps prevent the bread from getting soggy if your filling is moist.
- For a fun variation, swap out regular potatoes for sweet potatoes in the filling. Their subtle sweetness balances the spice and tang, making the sandwich even more kid-friendly.
Expert Tips
- For a richer flavor, consider adding a dollop of mayonnaise or aioli to your sandwich. This will complement the fish and add a creamy texture.
- If you're short on time, you can use pre-cooked fish from the store. Just make sure to flake it properly before adding it to the filling.
- Fresh herbs, such as chopped cilantro or parsley, can brighten up the flavors of the filling and add a fresh element to the sandwich.
Storage Instructions
- Leftover fish filling can be stored in an airtight container in the fridge for up to two days.
- The filling can be used as a flavorful topping for rice or stuffed into parathas for a quick lunch.
