Instructions

Prepare the Filling

  • Finely chop the onion, cabbage, carrot, and green chili. Mix well and add salt to taste. Set aside for 10-15 minutes to allow the vegetables to release moisture. Squeeze out excess water from the vegetable mixture using your hands. Stir in the ghee (if using).

Make the Dough

  • In a bowl, combine the whole wheat flour and vegetable oil. Gradually add water while mixing until a firm, smooth dough forms. Knead for 5-7 minutes until elastic. Cover and let the dough rest for at least 30 minutes.

Assemble the Momos

  • Roll out small portions of the dough into thin circles (about 3 inches in diameter). Place a spoonful of the vegetable filling in the center of each circle. Bring the edges of the circle together to form a pleat, sealing the filling inside. Repeat with remaining dough and filling.

Steam the Momos

  • Grease a bamboo steamer basket or a metal steamer basket with oil. Arrange the momos in the steamer, ensuring they are not overcrowded. Bring 4 cups of water to a boil in a pot. Place the steamer basket over the boiling water, cover, and steam for 10-15 minutes, or until the momos are cooked through.

Serve

  • Once cooked, carefully remove the momos from the steamer. Serve hot with your favorite dipping sauce, such as soy sauce, chili garlic sauce, or a simple tomato chutney.

Recipe Notes

Expert Tips for Perfect Steamed Momos

  • For extra flavor, add a pinch of ginger and garlic paste to the filling.
  • Don't overfill the momos; otherwise, they may burst during steaming.
  • If your dough is too sticky, add a little more flour. If it's too dry, add a little more water.
  • For best results, use a good quality bamboo steamer. If you don't have one, you can use a metal steamer basket or even a colander placed over a pot of boiling water.
