Prepare the Ingredients

  • Wash and thoroughly dry the basil leaves. Peel and roughly chop the garlic cloves. If using walnuts, lightly toast them in a dry pan for enhanced flavor (optional).

Combine in a Food Processor

  • Add the basil leaves, garlic, walnuts, and Parmesan cheese to a food processor.

Blend with Olive Oil

  • With the food processor running, slowly drizzle in the olive oil until a smooth paste forms. Scrape down the sides as needed.

Season and Adjust

  • Add salt and pepper to taste. Pulse a few times to combine. Taste and adjust seasonings as needed. Add more olive oil for a thinner consistency if desired.

Serve and Enjoy

  • Transfer the pesto to an airtight container. Press plastic wrap directly onto the surface of the pesto to prevent discoloration. Serve immediately or store in the refrigerator for up to a week.

Recipe Notes

Expert Tips for the Best Pesto

  • For a vibrant green color, use high-quality, fresh basil leaves and avoid over-processing.
  • Toasting the walnuts before blending enhances their nutty flavor.
  • Pressing plastic wrap directly onto the pesto’s surface prevents oxidation and helps maintain freshness.
  • Experiment with different cheeses! Pecorino Romano or even a blend of cheeses can add unique depth of flavor.
