Ingredients
For the Naan Dough
- 2 cup Whole Wheat Flour whole
- 1 tsp Baking Powder
- 1/4 tsp Baking Soda
- 2 pinch Salt
- 1 tbsp Mustard Oil
- 1 tbsp Yogurt
- 1/2 - 1 cup Water as needed for dough consistency
- 1 tbsp Butter for brushing
Instructions
Prepare the Beetroot Puree
- Blend the cooked beetroot, ginger, and green chilies into a smooth paste. Set aside.
Make the Naan Dough
- In a large bowl, combine the whole wheat flour, baking powder, baking soda, salt, and yogurt. Add the beetroot puree and mustard oil. Mix until it resembles breadcrumbs.
- Gradually add water, mixing until a soft, pliable dough forms. Knead for 2-3 minutes until smooth.
- Cover the dough and let it rise in a warm place for at least 4-5 hours, or overnight in the refrigerator.
- After rising, add 1 teaspoon of oil to the dough and knead briefly.
Shape and Fill the Naans
- Divide the dough into 4-5 equal portions. On a lightly floured surface, roll each portion into an oblong shape.
- Sprinkle minced garlic, chopped green chilies (if using), and coriander over the rolled dough. Roll again gently to incorporate the toppings into the dough.
Cook the Naan
- Heat a lightly oiled tawa (griddle) or large skillet over medium-high heat until hot.
- Place a naan on the hot tawa. After 1-2 minutes, you'll see bubbles forming on the surface.
- Flip the naan and cook the other side until golden brown and cooked through. You may need to cook over direct flame for a few seconds to ensure even cooking.
- Repeat with the remaining dough.
Serve
- Transfer the naans to a serving plate. Brush with melted butter or olive oil. Serve hot with your favorite dishes!
Recipe Notes
Expert Tips for Perfect Naan
- For a sweeter naan, add a teaspoon of sugar to the dough.
- If your dough seems too dry, add a tablespoon of milk or water at a time until you reach the desired consistency.
- Don't overcrowd the tawa; cook the naan in batches to ensure even cooking.
- Experiment with different herbs and spices! Add a pinch of cumin or a sprinkle of red pepper flakes for extra flavor.
