Instructions

Prepare the Green Gram

  • Rinse the split green gram thoroughly under cold water until the water runs clear. Drain well.

Grind the Green Gram

  • Grind the drained green gram coarsely using a blender or food processor. Avoid making a fine powder.

Cook the Halwa

  • Heat the ghee in a heavy-bottomed pan or kadai over medium heat. Add the coarsely ground green gram and stir constantly for 10-15 minutes, until it starts to brown slightly and release its aroma.

Add Milk and Sugar

  • Gradually add the milk, stirring continuously to prevent sticking. Once the mixture is well combined, add the sugar. Stir continuously until the sugar dissolves and the mixture thickens.

Incorporate Flavorings

  • Reduce the heat to low. Stir in the cardamom powder and continue cooking, stirring frequently, until the halwa pulls away from the sides of the pan and becomes thick and creamy (about 10-15 minutes).

Add Garnish and Finish

  • Stir in the raisins, chopped almonds, and shredded coconut. Cook for another 2-3 minutes.

Serve

  • Pour the halwa into a serving bowl. Garnish with silver leaf (optional) and serve warm.
