Ingredients
For the Dough
- 1 cup Water approximately 105-115°f (41-46°c)
- 1 tbsp Active Yeast dry
- 1 tbsp Sugar granulated
- 2 tbsp Olive Oil or other neutral oil
- 1 tsp Salt or to taste
- 1 tsp Garlic Powder or 1 clove minced garlic
- 1 tsp Pepper Flakes or more, red, to taste
- 1 tsp Onion Powder
- 2 1/2 - 3 cup Whole Wheat Flour plus more for dusting, whole
Instructions
Activate the Yeast
- Combine warm water, yeast, and sugar in a large bowl. Let stand for 5-10 minutes until foamy.
Make the Dough
- Add oil, salt, garlic powder, red pepper flakes, and onion powder to the yeast mixture. Gradually add flour, mixing until a soft dough forms. Turn out onto a lightly floured surface and knead for 5-7 minutes until smooth and elastic.
First Rise
- Place the dough in a lightly oiled bowl, turning to coat. Cover with plastic wrap and let rise in a warm place for 1-1.5 hours, or until doubled in size.
Shape the Breadsticks
- Punch down the dough and roll it out into a 1/4-inch thick rectangle. Brush with melted butter and sprinkle with cheese (if using). Fold the dough in half and seal the edges.
Cut and Twist
- Cut the dough into 1/2-inch wide strips using a pizza cutter or sharp knife. Gently twist each strip and place them on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper.
Bake
- Bake at 375°F (190°C) for 20-25 minutes, or until golden brown and crispy. Let cool slightly before serving.
Recipe Notes
Expert Tips
- For extra flavor, add a sprinkle of herbs like oregano or rosemary to the dough.
- If you don't have whole wheat flour, you can use all-purpose flour.
- Don't overcrowd the baking sheet; this will ensure even baking and crispy breadsticks.
- Serve warm with your favorite marinara sauce, pesto, or cheese dip.
