Instructions

Prepare the Potatoes

  • Peel and chop the potatoes into 2-inch pieces. Place the potatoes in a pot, cover with 1/4 cup of water, add 1/2 teaspoon of salt, and bring to a boil. Reduce heat and simmer until the potatoes are easily pierced with a fork, about 15-20 minutes.

Mash the Potatoes

  • Drain the potatoes well. Using a potato masher or a hand mixer, mash the potatoes until mostly smooth, leaving some slight texture if preferred.

Combine and Heat

  • In a saucepan, melt the butter over low heat. Add the milk and heat until warm. Stir in the remaining salt and freshly cracked black pepper. Gently fold in the mashed potatoes, mixing until smooth and creamy.

Serve

  • Remove from heat and serve immediately as a delicious accompaniment to your favorite dish. Garnish as desired.

Recipe Notes

Expert Tips for Perfect Mashed Potatoes

  • Choose the Right Potato: Russet potatoes are ideal for creamy mashed potatoes due to their high starch content. Yukon Golds are a great alternative for a slightly richer flavor.
  • Don't Overmash: Overmashing can result in gummy mashed potatoes. Aim for a mostly smooth consistency with some small lumps for texture.
  • Keep it Warm: If you need to keep the mashed potatoes warm before serving, place them in a warm oven (around 200°F) or use a warming drawer.
  • Get Creative with Toppings: Elevate your mashed potatoes with various toppings like chives, bacon bits, cheese, or sour cream.
