Ingredients
For the Chocolate Jaggery Mixture:
For the Yogurt Mixture:
- 1 cup Yogurt thick and full-fat greek yogurt recommended
- 1/2 cup Coconut Milk thick, fresh coconut milk
- 1/4 cup Milk homemade or store-bought; adjust sweetness to taste, condensed
- 1/4 cup Heavy Cream low-fat cream can be substituted
Other:
- 1 tsp Vanilla Extract optional, enhances flavor
- 6 Oven-Safe Bowls Or Ramekins small
- Water for bain-marie
Instructions
Prepare the Chocolate Jaggery Mixture
- Melt the jaggery in a saucepan over low heat. Separately, melt the chocolate in a microwave-safe bowl in 30-second intervals, stirring until smooth. Combine the melted jaggery and chocolate, stirring until well combined.
Prepare the Yogurt Mixture
- In a large bowl, whisk together the yogurt, coconut milk, condensed milk, heavy cream, and vanilla extract (if using) until smooth and creamy.
Combine and Bake
- Once the chocolate-jaggery mixture is slightly cooled but still warm, gently pour it into the yogurt mixture. Whisk until thoroughly combined and the mixture is smooth and creamy.
Bake in a Bain-Marie
- Pour the mixture into individual oven-safe bowls or ramekins. Place the bowls in a baking dish. Pour hot water into the baking dish until it reaches about halfway up the sides of the bowls (a bain-marie).
Finish Baking and Cooling
- Bake in a preheated oven at 350°F (180°C) for 30-40 minutes, or until the top is set and slightly firm. Remove from oven and allow to cool completely to room temperature.
Chill and Serve
- Refrigerate for at least 3-4 hours, or preferably overnight, to allow the flavors to meld and the dessert to set completely before serving. Enjoy chilled!
Recipe Notes
Expert Tips for the Perfect Baked Chocolate Mishti Doi
- Use high-quality dark chocolate for the richest flavor. Milk chocolate can also be used for a milder taste.
- For a smoother texture, strain the yogurt before mixing it with other ingredients. This will remove any lumps.
- Adjust the amount of condensed milk according to your preference. If using homemade condensed milk, start with a smaller amount and add more to taste.
- Don't overbake the Mishti Doi. Overbaking can result in a dry texture. Check for doneness by gently inserting a knife into the center; it should come out clean.
