Instructions

Prepare the Tofu

  • Press the tofu to remove excess water. This is crucial for achieving a crispy exterior. You can press it using a tofu press or by wrapping it in paper towels and placing a heavy object on top for at least 30 minutes.

Marinate the Tofu

  • Cut the pressed tofu into 1-inch cubes. In a bowl, combine the tofu cubes with salt, red chili powder, chaat masala, and garam masala. Toss well to ensure the tofu is evenly coated with the spices.

Cook the Tofu

  • Heat 1 tablespoon of oil in a large skillet or grill pan over medium-high heat. Add the marinated tofu cubes and cook, stirring occasionally, until golden brown and crispy on all sides. This should take about 8-10 minutes for pan-searing, or 10-12 minutes for grilling, depending on the heat.

Serve

  • Garnish with fresh cilantro and serve hot. Enjoy with your favorite dipping sauce or chutney.

Recipe Notes

Expert Tips for Perfect Tofu

  • Pressing is Key: Thoroughly pressing the tofu removes excess moisture, resulting in a crispier texture when pan-seared or grilled.
  • Don't overcrowd the pan: Ensure there's enough space between the tofu cubes for even browning. Work in batches if necessary.
  • Adjust the Spice Level: Feel free to adjust the amount of red chili powder to suit your spice preference. Start with less and add more to taste.
  • Get Creative with Dips: Serve with your favorite dipping sauce, such as peanut sauce, sweet chili sauce, or a simple yogurt dip.
