- 1 cup Milk
- 2 tbsp Ghee homemade
- 2 tbsp Jaggery Powder
- 2 tbsp Coconut Cream
- ½ tsp Cardamom Powder
For the Garnish
- 2 tbsp Fruits dry, mixed
- 1 Rock Sugar crystal thread misri
Instructions
- In a pan or kadai, melt the ghee over medium heat. Add the chestnut flour and roast, stirring constantly, until fragrant and lightly golden. This toasting process deepens the nutty flavor of the flour.
- Add the mixed dry fruits, jaggery powder, and cardamom powder to the roasted flour. Stir well to combine.
- Pour in the coconut cream and milk. Continue stirring as the mixture thickens. Cook until the halwa pulls away from the sides of the pan, indicating it's ready.
- Transfer the chestnut flour halwa to a serving dish. Garnish with additional ghee, dry fruits, and rock sugar. Serve warm and enjoy!
Recipe Notes
Good To Know
- For an extra nutty aroma and flavor, lightly toast the chestnut flour in ghee on low heat until it turns golden and releases a pleasant fragrance before adding the wet ingredients.
- If making this halwa for a fasting day (vrat), ensure the jaggery and ghee used are suitable for your fasting rules, or substitute with rock sugar (mishri) if jaggery is not permitted.
- Add finely chopped dried fruits like dates, figs, or apricots for a natural sweetness boost and chewy texture, or sprinkle toasted nuts such as cashews and pistachios on top for crunch and festive appeal.
- For a vegan version, swap cow milk with coconut or almond milk and use coconut oil instead of desi ghee. This will also enhance the halwa’s natural coconut notes, especially if using coconut cream.
Expert Tips
- For a smoother halwa, ensure there are no lumps in the chestnut flour before adding it to the ghee. Sift the flour if necessary.
- Adjust the sweetness of the halwa by adding more or less jaggery/sugar according to your preference.
- Don’t overcook the halwa. It should thicken and start leaving the sides of the pan.
Storage Instructions
- Store leftover chestnut halwa in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3-4 days.
- Gently reheat in the microwave or on the stovetop before serving.
