- 1/3 cup Chocolate Chips 60% cacao or higher, dark
- 2 tbsp Corn Flour
- 2 tbsp Water to mix with cornstarch
- Optional tbsp Heavy Cream 1-2 tablespoons for extra richness
- Optional Salt for the hot chocolate sauce
Instructions
Prepare the Churro Dough
- Boil 1/2 cup of water in a saucepan. Add the butter and stir until melted and combined.
- Remove from heat and gradually whisk in the all-purpose flour until a smooth dough forms.
- Return the saucepan to low heat and cook the dough for 2-3 minutes, stirring constantly, to cook out the raw flour taste.
- Remove from heat and let the dough cool slightly.
- In a separate bowl, whisk together the egg and vanilla extract.
- Gradually add the egg mixture to the dough, mixing until well combined. The dough will be sticky.
- Stir in 1/2 cup of milk; add more milk, 1 tablespoon at a time, until the dough reaches a pipeable consistency.
- Transfer the dough to a piping bag fitted with a large star tip.
Bake the Churros
- Preheat oven to 400°F (200°C). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
- Pipe 4-inch churro shapes onto the prepared baking sheet, leaving some space between each.
- Bake for 20-25 minutes, or until golden brown and crisp.
Make the Hot Chocolate Dipping Sauce
- In a small saucepan, heat the milk over medium heat until it begins to simmer.
- Remove from heat and stir in the dark chocolate chips and optional pinch of salt until melted and smooth.
- In a small bowl, whisk together the cornstarch and 2 tablespoons of water until smooth.
- Return the saucepan to low heat and slowly whisk in the cornstarch mixture. Stir constantly until the sauce thickens to your desired consistency.
- Stir in optional heavy cream.
- Remove from heat and set aside.
Finish and Serve
- While churros are still warm, toss them in a mixture of brown sugar and ground cinnamon.
- Serve the baked churros immediately with the hot chocolate dipping sauce. Enjoy!
Recipe Notes
Expert Tips for Perfect Baked Churros
- For extra crispy churros, let the dough chill in the refrigerator for at least 30 minutes before piping.
- Don't overcrowd the baking sheet; this will ensure even baking and crispy churros.
- If your dough is too thick, add a little more milk, one tablespoon at a time, until you reach a smooth, pipeable consistency.
- For a richer hot chocolate sauce, use higher quality dark chocolate and add a splash of vanilla extract.
