Ingredients
For the Dough
- 2 cup All-Purpose Flour
- 1 tsp Baking Powder
- 1 ½ tsp Salt or to taste
- 3 tbsp Oil
- Water as needed for kneading, cold
For the Filling
- 5 clove Garlic finely chopped
- 1 Onion finely chopped
- 1 Bell Peppers green, finely chopped
- ½ Carrot finely chopped
- ¼ cup Corn Kernels or green peas
- 1 ½ tsp Salt or to taste
- ¼ tsp Chili Powder for extra heat, optional, red
- 1 tsp Sugar
- 4 tbsp Pizza/Pasta Sauce
- ½ cup Mozzarella Cheese shredded
Instructions
- In a large bowl, combine the all-purpose flour, baking powder, and salt.
- Add the oil and rub it into the flour mixture until it resembles coarse crumbs. This helps create a flaky texture in the final product.
- Gradually add cold water while mixing until a smooth and firm dough forms. Avoid adding too much water at once.
- Knead the dough for about 10 minutes until it becomes smooth and elastic. Kneading develops the gluten, resulting in a pliable dough.
- Cover the dough with a damp cloth and let it rest for 1 hour. This allows the gluten to relax, making the dough easier to roll.
- Heat oil in a large skillet or wok over medium heat. Add the chopped garlic and sauté until fragrant.
- Add the chopped onion and bell pepper to the skillet and sauté until softened.
- Stir in the chopped carrot, corn kernels (or peas), salt, red chili powder (if using), and sugar. Sauté for another minute.
- Add the pizza/pasta sauce and mix well to coat the vegetables. Cover and simmer for 2-3 minutes, or until the vegetables are slightly tender.
- Remove the filling from the heat and let it cool completely. This prevents the cheese from melting prematurely.
- Once cooled, gently mix in the shredded mozzarella cheese.
- After the dough has rested, lightly knead it again. Divide the dough in half and roll each half into a rectangular shape, slightly thicker than a typical pizza crust.
- Cut the rolled dough into smaller rectangles or squares. Brush the edges of each rectangle with water. This acts as a glue to seal the puffs.
- Place a spoonful of the vegetable and cheese filling onto one side of each dough rectangle.
- Fold the other half of the dough over the filling to form a rectangular or square puff. Press the edges firmly to seal, crimping with a fork for a decorative touch.
- Heat oil in a deep fryer or large pot to 350°F (175°C). Carefully place the pizza puffs into the hot oil and fry until golden brown and crispy, turning occasionally.
- Alternatively, preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Brush the pizza puffs with oil and bake for 30-35 minutes, or until golden brown and crispy.
- Serve the hot Vegetable Pizza Puffs with your favorite dipping sauces, such as tomato sauce or mayonnaise.
Recipe Notes
Good To Know
- For an extra crispy crust, chill the assembled pizzapuffs in the refrigerator for 20 minutes before frying or baking. This helps prevent the dough from absorbing excess oil and enhances the flaky texture.
- Try brushing the top of each pizzapuff with a mixture of olive oil and dried Italian herbs (like oregano and basil) just before baking for an aromatic, pizza-like finish.
- For a vegan version, substitute the mozzarella cheese with a plant-based alternative and use a dairy-free pizza sauce. Ensure the dough is made with oil instead of butter or ghee.
- If making ahead, assemble the pizzapuffs and freeze them raw on a tray. Once solid, transfer to a zip-lock bag and store for up to one month. Cook directly from frozen, adding a few extra minutes to the cooking time.
Expert Tips
- Customize your pizzapuff fillings! Get creative with different cheeses, vegetables, and meats. Consider using pre-cooked ingredients like roasted peppers or caramelized onions for enhanced flavor.
- Don't overcrowd the pan when frying or baking. Ensure adequate space between each pizzapuff for even cooking and optimal crispiness.
- Serve these pizzapuffs with a side of marinara sauce or your favorite dipping sauce for an extra delicious experience.
Storage Instructions
- Store leftover pizzapuffs in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days. Reheat in a preheated oven or air fryer for best results.
