Instructions

  • Cut the plantains in half. Pressure cook them until very soft.
  • Once the plantains are cool enough to handle, peel and mash them thoroughly in a bowl.
  • Add the gram flour, rice flour, garam masala, red chili powder, and salt to the mashed plantains.
  • Mix all the ingredients together until well combined.
  • Form the mixture into small balls, roughly the size of ping-pong balls. Place them on a plate.

  • Coat the plantain balls with semolina. This will create a crispy exterior when fried.
  • Heat the cooking oil in a large pan over medium heat. Ensure the oil is hot enough by dropping a small piece of the mixture into it – it should sizzle gently.
  • Carefully place the plantain balls into the hot oil. Do not overcrowd the pan. Fry them in batches if necessary.
  • Fry the falafel, turning occasionally, until they are golden brown and crispy, about 5-7 minutes. This ensures they are cooked through.
  • Remove the falafel from the oil and place them on a plate lined with paper towels to drain excess oil.
  • Serve the crispy plantain falafel hot with your favorite dipping sauce, such as ketchup or tomato sauce.
