  • Grate fresh coconut if using whole coconut.
  • Chop green chilies and ginger into small pieces for easy grinding.
  • Measure all ingredients and keep them ready.
  • Add grated coconut, roasted gram, green chilies, ginger, tamarind, and salt into a mixer jar.
  • Add a small amount of water.
  • Grind into a smooth and creamy paste.
  • Heat oil in a small pan.
  • Add mustard seeds and let them splutter.
  • Add dry red chili, curry leaves, and a pinch of hing.
  • Fry for a few seconds until aromatic.
  • Pour the hot tempering over the prepared chutney.
  • Serve fresh with idli, dosa, vada, or upma.

Recipe Notes

  • Use freshly grated coconut which gives a naturally sweet taste and creamy texture to the chutney. Avoid using frozen coconut.
  • Add water gradually during grinding to adjust the consistency.
