Ingredients
Dry Ingredients
- 1 cup Whole Wheat Flour whole
- 1 cup All-Purpose Flour also known as maida
- 3/4 tsp Salt adjust to taste
- 1 tsp Sugar
- 1 tsp Yeast dry, instant
- 3/4 tsp Carom Seed also known as carom seeds
Wet Ingredients
- 2 tbsp Olive Oil
- 1 cup Cheddar Cheese grated
- 1/2 cup Water approximately 105-115°f (40-46°c)
Instructions
Combine Dry Ingredients
- In a large bowl, whisk together the whole wheat flour, all-purpose flour, salt, sugar, and ajwain.
Activate Yeast
- In a small bowl, add warm water and sugar. Stir until the sugar dissolves. Sprinkle in the yeast and let stand for 5-7 minutes until foamy.
Combine Wet and Dry Ingredients
- Add the olive oil and grated cheddar cheese to the dry ingredients. Mix well. Pour the activated yeast mixture into the flour mixture and knead for 5-8 minutes until a smooth and soft dough forms. Add a tablespoon or two of water if needed to achieve desired consistency.
First Rise
- Transfer the dough to a lightly oiled bowl, turning to coat. Cover and let rise in a warm place for 1 hour, or until doubled in size.
Preheat Oven and Prepare Baking Sheet
- Preheat oven to 350°F (180°C). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
Shape and Bake Breadsticks
- Punch down the dough to release air. Roll out small pieces of dough into thin sticks, about 1/4 inch thick. Place them on the prepared baking sheet, leaving some space between each breadstick.
Bake
- Bake for 18-20 minutes, or until golden brown, rotating the baking sheet halfway through for even browning.
Cool and Serve
- Remove the breadsticks from the oven and let them cool completely on a wire rack before serving. Store leftovers in an airtight container.
Recipe Notes
Expert Tips
- For extra flavor, add 1 teaspoon of dried oregano or Italian seasoning to the dry ingredients.
- If your dough seems too sticky, add a tablespoon of flour at a time until it becomes manageable.
- Don't overcrowd the baking sheet; this will prevent even baking.
- Experiment with different cheeses! Parmesan, mozzarella, or a blend would also be delicious.
