Instructions

Prepare the Custard

  • Whisk together eggs, milk, 4 teaspoons sugar, and vanilla extract in a large bowl until well combined.
  • Cut the white bread into 1-inch cubes and gently stir them into the custard mixture, ensuring all pieces are coated.
  • Let the bread soak in the custard for at least 15 minutes, or until the bread is fully saturated.

Create the Caramelized Sugar Base

  • In a small saucepan over medium heat, melt the butter. Add 2 tablespoons of sugar and cook, stirring constantly, until the sugar is melted and turns a light amber color. Be careful not to burn it.

Assemble and Bake

  • Pour the caramelized sugar into a greased baking dish (approximately 8x8 inches). Carefully pour the bread pudding mixture over the caramelized sugar.
  • Dot the top with blueberries and sprinkle with a few drops of food coloring, if desired.
  • Bake in a preheated oven at 350°F (175°C) for 45-50 minutes, or until a knife inserted into the center comes out clean.

Serve

  • Let the bread pudding cool slightly before serving. Enjoy warm!

Recipe Notes

Expert Tips

  • For a richer flavor, use stale bread. The slightly dry texture absorbs the custard better.
  • Don't over-bake the bread pudding. It should be set but still slightly moist in the center.
  • Feel free to experiment with other berries or fruit, such as raspberries, strawberries, or peaches.
  • Serve warm with a scoop of vanilla ice cream or a dollop of whipped cream for an extra indulgent treat.
