Instructions

Preparation

  • Rinse the basmati rice thoroughly under cold water and soak for at least 20 minutes. Drain well.

Sautéing the Spices

  • Heat ghee in a large pot or pan over medium heat. Add the cinnamon stick, cloves, and cardamom pods. Sauté for a minute until fragrant.
  • Add cumin seeds and sauté until they turn dark brown and crackle. This enhances their flavor.

Cooking the Rice

  • Add the drained basmati rice to the pot and stir to coat evenly with the ghee and spices.
  • Pour in the water and add salt. Stir gently to combine.

Simmering & Fluffing

  • Bring the mixture to a boil, then reduce heat to low, cover the pot tightly, and simmer for 15-18 minutes, or until the water is absorbed and the rice is cooked through. Do not lift the lid during simmering.
  • Once cooked, fluff the rice gently with a fork to separate the grains.

Serving

  • Serve your Jeera Rice hot as a delightful side dish alongside your favorite curries, dals, or vegetable dishes.

Recipe Notes

Expert Tips for Perfect Jeera Rice

  • Rinse the rice thoroughly: This removes excess starch and prevents the rice from becoming sticky.
  • Don't lift the lid: Resist the urge to peek while the rice is simmering. This helps to create perfectly fluffy rice.
  • Adjust water as needed: The amount of water might vary slightly depending on the type of rice and your stove. It's always better to start with a little less water and add more if needed.
  • Toast the spices for deeper flavor: Toasting the spices before adding the rice brings out their full aroma and adds layers of flavor to your Jeera Rice.
