In layman terms, it’s made by fermenting the sugars found in apples using vinegar. And it’s no secret that vinegar has been used for centuries as a healing agent for everything from sanitization to burning fat.
The fact that it has lasted so long is either because it truly is a magic drink, or that we have just been very gullible. Either way, with these many claimed benefits, it’s worth checking out if they are actually true.
It’s also equally important to find out what myths have slipped through the cracks over the years, if any, and debunk them so there’s a better understanding of what vinegar, and particularly Apple Cider can do for us and our health.

Benefits
a) It increases the benefits of the minerals and vitamins in your body. All it does is add to the acid your stomach produces, which helps in absorption of all the vitamins and minerals, and makes sure that they get dissolved.
b) It helps prep your muscles before a serious workout. This is especially true if you’re an endurance worker, where you push your body to a serious limit. Your muscles need the energy to put out that much work, and ACV helps convert all that you consume into carbs for your muscles to use, which makes it easier to workout. It was thoroughly studied in this
c) The main compound in AVC is acetic acid. It’s proven to have a potent impact on the human body, depending on how, when, and how much of it to consume. Seeing as it has only 3 calories per tablespoon, it’s a healthier alternative to almost everything else. See if you can replace any other ingredients with ACV in your lifestyle.
d) It helps lower blood sugar and fight diabetes. This is proven as well in many studies conducted in the field. This one states that people with diabetes actually “improved their blood glucose levels by 25% with vinegar”. This is, by far, the most successful application of AVC in the form of an effective remedy.
e) It lowers your blood pressure. This study conducted on animals shows that your blood pressure can be brought under control, albeit a few points only, with ACV. It’s not understood how or why, but many scientists believe regular and controlled consumption of ACV can prove beneficial for patients with uncontrollable blood pressure.
f) It keeps you full for longer. This has been studied in a lot of research and has come back true every single time, and one that has been overplayed.
By keeping your sugar under control, it increases your satiety, which makes you eat less and can lead to actual weight loss on the scale. But obviously, it is a combined effort. Just adding ACV or reducing any other ingredient will not help, if the rest of your lifestyle is damaging.
g) It cleans fruits and vegetables. The research conducted shows that vinegar has antibacterial properties that can reduce and potentially alleviate all harmful pathogens found in fruits and vegetables. Simply spritz the produce, leave it for not more than a minute or so, and rinse in regular water.

h) It lowers cholesterol and promotes good heart health. This study has been done on rats and is yet to be completed on humans, but many scientists believe that the same can be applied to humans. But observations show that it does have a positive impact to a certain limit.
i) The last but not the least important, is that ACV kills bad smells. It’s a great neutralizer and alleviates everything from bad breath to smelly feet. It’s also a great conditioning agent for hair and skin (diluted). So, if nothing else, use it as an antibacterial mouth wash and a nice wash for your hair and body!
Myths
a) It does not whiten your teeth! The acid can actually erode the enamel of the tooth and cause slow deterioration and more harm than good!
b) It cleans wounds. Sure, the acidic properties will kill bacteria, but it will also irritate your skin and cause burn marks. So, don’t do this. Get an antibacterial soap or ointment instead.
c) It detoxifies your system. Your body detoxifies itself regularly thanks to the liver and kidneys. You don’t need to flush in unnecessary amounts of acid to add to that. It might even leave your system acidic and this might cause other problems.
d) It also does not cure acne! The acid will irritate the skin on your face even more and cause permanent lesions and scarring.
e) It’s also not a very good “energy drink”. It’s acidic acid and consuming it is only going to affect your appetite, not your energy in the long run. You can consume it with a combination of other sugar-rich foods to aid in the energy sustenance.

How to Use Apple Cider Vinegar
Now that you know everything there is to about ACV, it’s surely a great addition to your kitchen shelf. A good pointer to keep in mind is, never consume any vinegar undiluted. So, now that you know that, how do you consume it? Here are a few ideas to get you started.
a) The most common way of doing it is by missing a tablespoon or two in a glass of water and drinking it after every meal. This is the safest option and doesn’t require much effort. But make sure it’s after the meal and not before since the acid can cause uneasiness and nausea.
b) A different take on that would be to drink ACV with fruit juices. Since it helps absorb nutrients faster, this is the best place to start. Stick to vitamin-C rich juices such as grapefruit, lemon, orange, etc. for maximised benefits.
c) Make a salad dressing with it. Do yourself a favour and avoid the oil; it reduces the effects of ACV. Instead, make a salad dressing with ACV, lemon juice, herbs, and garlic if you like and mix it in a food processor for a very aromatic and healthy dressing.
You can try coming up with your own unique ways to consume ACV (always diluted) and see how it benefits your health in the long run!
