Ingredients
For the Dough
- 1 cup All-Purpose Flour also known as maida
- 1/2 cup Yogurt also known as curd
- 1 1/2 tsp Salt adjust to taste
- 1 tsp Vegetable Oil
- 1 pinch Baking Soda
- 1/4 tsp Sugar
- 1/2 - 3/4 cup Water add gradually as needed to form a soft dough
For Rolling and Finishing
- 1/4 cup All-Purpose Flour for dusting, also known as maida
- 1 tbsp Mint Leaves finely chopped or use 1 teaspoon of dried mint powder, dried
- 2 tbsp Butter for brushing after cooking
Instructions
Prepare the Dough
- Combine all-purpose flour, yogurt, salt, oil, baking soda, and sugar in a large bowl.
- Gradually add water, mixing until a soft, pliable dough forms.
- Knead the dough for 5-7 minutes until smooth and elastic.
- Cover the dough with a damp cloth and let it rest in a warm place for at least 2 hours, or until doubled in size.
Shape and Roll the Naan
- Once the dough has risen, divide it into 8-10 equal-sized balls.
- On a lightly floured surface, roll each ball into an oval or round shape, about 1/8 inch thick.
- Sprinkle dried mint leaves evenly over the rolled naan.
- Gently roll over the mint to adhere it to the dough.
Cook the Naan
- Heat a lightly oiled tawa (griddle) over medium heat.
- Place a naan on the hot tawa, and cook for 1-2 minutes per side, or until golden brown and slightly puffed up. Lightly brush the surface with water before placing on the tawa for better browning.
- If using a gas stovetop, you may briefly lift the edge and sprinkle a few drops of water under the naan to aid in puffing.
Serve
- Once cooked, brush each naan generously with melted butter.
- Serve immediately with your favorite Indian dishes.
Recipe Notes
Expert Tips for Perfect Naan
- For extra flavor, add a pinch of garlic powder or chili flakes to the dough.
- If your dough feels too sticky, add a little more flour, a tablespoon at a time.
- Don't overcrowd the tawa; cook the naan in batches to ensure even browning.
- For a crispier naan, cook it over higher heat for a shorter time.
