  • Wash and soak the chana dal for about 30 minutes. Peel and dice the bottle gourd into small pieces.

Cooking the Dal

  • Heat oil in a pressure cooker and add cumin seeds. Let them crackle gently.
  • Add soaked chana dal and diced bottle gourd to the cooker.
  • Add turmeric powder, red chilli powder, and salt. Mix well.
  • Pour in water, stir once, close the lid, and pressure cook for 3 to 4 whistles on medium heat.

Final Steps

  • Let the pressure release naturally. Open the lid and lightly mash if a thicker consistency is preferred.
  • Sprinkle some coriander. Serve warm as a dal or sabzi-style dish with roti or as a light bowl meal.
