Ingredients
For the Whole Wheat Pizza Dough
- 3 cup Whole Wheat Flour for the base, whole
- 2 tsp Active Yeast dry
- 1 tsp Sugar
- 1 tsp Salt
- 4 Tbsp Oil
- 1 cup Water or milk
- 2 Tbsp Butter for brushing, or milk
For the Veggie Topping
- 2 Onions finely chopped
- 2 Tomatoes finely diced
- 2 Bell Peppers simla, finely chopped
- 1/2 tsp Turmeric Powder haldi
- 2 Tbsp Oil
- 1 1/2 tsp Salt or to taste
- 1/2 tsp Oregano dried
- 1/2 tsp Chili Flakes red
- 2 Tbsp Tomato Ketchup
For Assembling the Pizza
- 2 cup Amul Cheese grated
Instructions
- Activate the yeast by dissolving the sugar in 1/2 cup warm water. Sprinkle the yeast over the water and let it stand for 10 minutes until foamy. This allows the yeast to come alive and create a light and airy dough.
- In a large bowl, combine the whole wheat flour and salt. Create a well in the center and pour in the activated yeast mixture.
- Gradually incorporate the remaining water while kneading the dough. After about 5 minutes, add the oil and continue kneading for 10-15 minutes until the dough becomes smooth and elastic, even if initially shaggy.
- Perform the windowpane test to check if the dough is properly kneaded. Stretch a small piece of dough; if it forms a thin, translucent membrane without tearing, it's ready. If not, knead for a few more minutes. Form the dough into a smooth ball and place it in a deep, oiled bowl. Cover and let it rise in a warm place until doubled in size.
- Once doubled, gently punch down the dough to release the air. Divide it into 8-10 equal portions and roll each into a 3/4-inch thick circle. Prick the surface of each circle with a fork to prevent air bubbles during baking. Place the prepared pizza bases on a lightly greased baking tray.
- Let the pizza bases rest for 10 minutes. Meanwhile, preheat the oven to 425°F (220°C). After 10 minutes, brush the bases with milk or melted butter and par-bake for 8-10 minutes. This creates a crisp crust. Remove from the oven and set aside.
- To prepare the topping, heat the oil in a pan over medium heat. Add the chopped onions, tomatoes, and bell peppers. Cook for 5-10 minutes, covered, until softened. Stir in the turmeric powder, salt, red chili flakes, dried oregano, and tomato ketchup.
- Spread the prepared vegetable topping evenly over the par-baked pizza bases. Sprinkle generously with grated cheese. Bake in the preheated oven for 5-7 minutes, or until the cheese is melted and bubbly. Slice into 8 pieces and serve hot.
Recipe Notes
Good To Know
- To ensure a lighter and airier whole wheat pizza crust, allow the dough to rise in a warm spot until it doubles in size—this may take slightly longer than white flour dough.
- For extra flavor, brush the crust edges with a mixture of olive oil, minced garlic, and Italian herbs before baking.
- Boost the protein and fiber content by sprinkling cooked, crumbled paneer or chickpeas over the vegetable toppings before adding cheese.
- For a vegan version, substitute dairy cheese with a plant-based cheese alternative and use a tablespoon of ground flaxseed mixed with three tablespoons of water as a binder in the dough, if needed.
Expert Tips
- For a crispier crust, pre-bake it for a few minutes before adding the toppings.
- Don't overload the pizza with toppings, as this can make it soggy. Distribute them evenly for best results.
- Get creative with your toppings! Try using different cheeses, vegetables, or even adding a drizzle of balsamic glaze after baking.
Storage Instructions
- Leftover pizza can be stored in the refrigerator for up to 3 days. Reheat in a preheated oven or skillet for best results.
