Instructions
- Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour a loaf pan. This ensures the cake won't stick.
- In a bowl, sift together the all-purpose flour, salt, and baking soda. Sifting aerates the dry ingredients for a lighter cake.
- In a separate bowl, whisk together the sugar, milk, orange essence, and oil until the sugar dissolves.
- Add the orange zest to the wet ingredients and mix well.
- Gently fold the dry ingredients into the wet ingredients until just combined. Be careful not to overmix, which can make the cake tough.
- Pour the batter into the prepared loaf pan and bake for 35-40 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.
- Let the cake cool in the pan for 10 minutes before inverting it onto a wire rack to cool completely.
- Once the orange cake is cool, cut it into slices. Using a heart-shaped cookie cutter, cut out heart shapes from each slice. Set these aside.
- Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour the same loaf pan.
- Sift together the all-purpose flour, cocoa powder, baking powder, and baking soda.
- In a mixing bowl, cream together the butter and sweetened condensed milk.
- Add the vanilla essence and mix well.
- Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients, alternating with the club soda, and mix until just combined.
- Spread a thin layer of chocolate batter in the bottom of the prepared loaf pan.
- Arrange the orange heart shapes in a single layer down the center of the pan, pointed ends up.
- Carefully pour the remaining chocolate batter over and around the orange hearts, ensuring they are fully covered.
- Bake for 35-40 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.
- Let the cake cool in the pan for 10 minutes before inverting it onto a wire rack to cool completely.
- In a mixing bowl, beat together the icing sugar and butter until light and fluffy.
- Add the cocoa powder, vanilla essence, and heavy cream. Beat until smooth and spreadable.
- Once the cake is completely cool, frost the top and sides with the buttercream frosting.
- Chill in the refrigerator for 20-30 minutes to set the frosting.
- Drizzle chocolate syrup over the frosted cake and slice to reveal the hidden hearts.
Recipe Notes
Good To Know
- Frosting is optional.
- For a vibrant Valentine's Day presentation, tint the heart-shaped cake batter pink or red using natural food coloring before baking and embedding it in the main cake.
- For a stronger orange flavor, brush the finished cake with a simple syrup made from fresh orange juice and a touch of sugar while it’s still warm.
- Sprinkle flaky sea salt over the chocolate glaze or ganache for a salty-sweet contrast and subtle crunch.
Expert Tips
- Use high-quality chocolate for the glaze or ganache to enhance the overall flavor of the cake.
- If making your own heart-shaped cake insert, consider using a smaller cutter than you might expect, as the cake will expand during baking.
- For a cleaner finish when glazing, place the cake on a wire rack set over a baking sheet to catch any drips.
Storage Instructions
- Wrap leftover cake tightly and refrigerate for up to three days.
- Bring slices to room temperature before serving, or briefly warm in the microwave to restore softness.
