Instructions

Prepare the Dough

  • Combine flour, oil, and salt in a bowl. Gradually add water, mixing with your hands to form a smooth, pliable dough. Knead for 5-7 minutes until smooth and elastic. Cover and let rest for 15 minutes.

Make the Filling

  • Heat oil in a pan. Add cumin seeds and let them splutter. Add minced garlic and sauté for 30 seconds until fragrant.
  • Add grated cabbage and chopped capsicum. Stir-fry for 2-3 minutes until slightly softened. Close the lid and cook for another 2 minutes to help the vegetables soften further.
  • Season with salt, pepper, coriander, and food coloring. Mix well and cook for another minute. Set aside to cool completely.

Shape the Momos

  • Divide the dough into three equal portions. Add food coloring to each portion (green, orange, and leave one portion plain). Roll each portion into a thin circle (like a large roti).
  • Use a cookie cutter or a round bowl to cut out numerous circles from each colored dough.
  • Arrange 3-4 circles of alternating colors vertically, creating a flower shape. Add a spoonful of filling to the center.
  • Gently gather and pleat the edges of the circles together to enclose the filling, creating a flower shape.

Steam the Momos

  • Place the momos in a steamer basket lined with parchment paper. Steam for 15-20 minutes, or until cooked through and the dough is translucent.

Serve

  • Serve immediately with your favorite chutney or dipping sauce. Enjoy!

Recipe Notes

Expert Tips for Flower-Shaped Cabbage Momos

  • For perfectly soft momos, ensure the filling is not too watery. Squeeze out any excess moisture from the grated cabbage before adding it to the pan.
  • If your dough is too sticky, add a little more flour. If it’s too dry, add a little more water.
  • Experiment with different food colorings or natural alternatives like beetroot for pink or turmeric for yellow.
  • Get creative with the filling! Try adding other vegetables like carrots, peas, or mushrooms.
