Ingredients
For the Puff Pastry
- 2 cup All-Purpose Flour also known as maida
- 1 cup (2 sticks) Butter cold, cut into cubes, unsalted
- 1/2 cup Water
- 1/4 tsp Saffron strands
For the Apple Filling
- 2 Apple medium, such as granny smith or honeycrisp, thinly sliced
- 2 tbsp Lemon Juice
- 1/4 cup Water for softening apples
Instructions
Make the Puff Pastry
- Combine flour and cold butter cubes. Cut the butter into the flour using a pastry blender or your fingertips until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs. Gradually add ice water, mixing until the dough just comes together. Do not overmix.
- Wrap the dough in plastic wrap and chill for at least 30 minutes.
Prepare the Apples
- Thinly slice the apples. In a microwave-safe bowl, combine apple slices, lemon juice, and water. Microwave on medium for 3-4 minutes, or until softened. Let cool to room temperature.
Assemble the Roses
- On a lightly floured surface, roll out the chilled puff pastry into a large rectangle. Cut into 8-inch long strips, about 1/2 inch wide.
- Brush each strip with melted butter and sprinkle with cinnamon-sugar mixture.
- Arrange apple slices on one half of each strip, slightly overlapping. Fold the other half of the pastry over the apples.
- Roll up tightly, starting from the apple-filled side. Gently shape into a rose.
Bake the Roses
- Preheat oven to 400°F (200°C). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
- Arrange the apple roses on the baking sheet. Bake for 25-30 minutes, or until golden brown and crisp.
- Sprinkle with extra cinnamon-sugar before serving.
Serve and Enjoy
- Serve warm or at room temperature. Enjoy your beautiful and delicious eggless apple roses!
Recipe Notes
Expert Tips for Perfect Apple Roses
- Use a sharp knife or mandoline slicer to get very thin apple slices for best results.
- Don't overcook the apples in the microwave; they should be soft but not mushy.
- If your dough becomes too sticky, chill it for a bit longer before rolling.
- For extra visual appeal, use a variety of apple colors in your roses.
